What is aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the use of natural oils for therapeutic purposes. These oils are extracted from flowers, bark, stems, leaves, roots or other parts of a plant to improve psychological and physical well-being.

The inhaled aroma of these "essential" oils is generally thought to stimulate brain function. Essential oils can also be absorbed through the skin, where they travel through the bloodstream.

What is aromatherapy used for?

As a form of alternative medicine, aromatherapy is gaining momentum. It is used for a variety of applications, including pain relief, mood enhancement and cognitive enhancement.

However, some studies have shown that aromatherapy can offer health benefits, including:

  • Relief from anxiety and depression
  • Improved quality of life, especially for people with chronic health problems
  • Improved sleep
  • Reduction of pain in people with osteoarthritis of the knee
  • Reducing pain in people with kidney stones

How does aromatherapy work?

Experts believe that aromatherapy activates areas of your nose called scent receptors, which send messages through your nervous system to your brain.

Oils can activate areas of your brain, such as your limbic system - the part of the brain that controls emotions. They may also have an impact on your hypothalamus, which can respond to oil by creating beneficial brain chemicals like serotonin.

Essential oils

Essential oils used in aromatherapy are usually extracted from various plant parts and then distilled. Highly concentrated oils can be inhaled directly or indirectly or applied to the skin through massage, lotions or bath salts. Some essential oil manufacturers have oils that can be taken internally, but research into the safety and efficacy of this method is extremely limited.

Application of essential oils

The method of application depends on the desired effect and the essential oil chosen. There are a large number of essential oils available, each with its own healing properties. There are many types of application methods. For example, you can apply essential oils topically using compresses, sprays, baths or by massaging them into the skin. When oils are applied to the skin, side effects may include allergic reactions, skin irritation and sun sensitivity.
